Permanent eyeliner is a technique of cosmetic tattooing where we implant color on the lid & lash line to enhance and draw attention to the eyes. There are two different types of permanent eyeliner…

Eyeliner

Lash Line Enhancment

With this technique, we create a crisp, ultra thin, subtle liner across your lash line. This will make your lashes appear fuller & denser, drawing attention to your eyes.

smokey Eyeliner

If you wear liner every day, this slightly more dramatic technique might suit you better. A dark and defined lash line with a smoked out upward wing adds a sultry look while still being every-day wearable.

  • the process

Alright, so you booked your appoitment, yay! But… now what?

Click through these slides to see how to prepare, what to know, and how to keep your eyeliner looking flawless after everything is said and done.

  • 6 months before appointment

Stop using any lash growth serums. This is vital for the health of your eye area and for the best possible healed result.

  • 4-6 weeks before your appointment

You should discontinue the use of any harsh skincare products such as retinal and tretinoin around the eye area. You should also avoid getting any botox, filler, or abrasive facials.

  • 1-2 weeks before your appointment

Make sure your eyes are lash extension free. If you currently have them on your eyes, its important to have them removed around this time to allow your skin to fully heal due to the removal process possibly leaving your lash line/lid tender.

  • 72 hours before your appointment

Due to the eye area being such a sensitive area, to avoid possible swelling & bruising, it’s advised to start taking over the counter arnica tablets at this time.

  • 24 hours before your appointment

You should avoid alcohol, exercise, caffeine, and ibuprofen/aspirin.

If you wear contacts, make sure to plan to wear your glasses the day of and throughout the beginning of the healing process. We cannot work on you if you come in wearing contacts due to possible risk and complications.

It’s also important to come in with minimal or no makeup, some waterproof/heavy makeup is difficult to remove and this can cut into our appointment time.

  • at your appointment

Consultation: First, we will go over your concerns, goals, and answer any questions you have about the process before we get started. At this time, we will also remind you of the process so that you are aware of what’s happening every step of the way.

Mapping: With lash line enhancement, there is no real mapping process. Where we are placing our liner is right where your lashes grow. With smokey liner, we map out the directions and size of the wing based on eye shape, lid space, and bone structure. It’s important to come into your liner appointment with an open mind, many factors of liner are based off your eyes anatomy and what will be best for you long term. Once we have completed the mapping process, we will have you take a look and approve everything before we get started.

Application: Now is the time for us to get to work! Typically, we’ll start on one eye, doing a quick “pass” to prep the skin and solidify our mapping. Then we will let you numb, and go in for a second pass on the same eye. Then we will move on to the next eye and do the same. We’ll continue to bounce back and forth building up saturation until we’ve reached our goal.

Reveal & Education: Once your eyeliner has been completed, it’s time for the big reveal! Right after your appointment, your eyeliner will look bold, bigger, and possibly look a little uneven due to swelling. Your eyeliner will shrink and heal to a soft charcoal once fully healed. After you see your fresh eyeliner, we will go over aftercare with you & give you the necessary tools to execute it perfectly in an aftercare baggie. In your baggie, you’ll also get a few goodies, including written aftercare instructions to refer to during the healing process.

  • aftercare

What You’ll Do: Starting the night of your appointment, and every morning and every night for 5 days, you’ll gently swipe a damp cotton ball across your liner to eliminate any lymph fluid. Then you will apply a half of a rice size amount of healing ointment to BOTH eye, not each. You want the liner to look hydrated but not glossy or wet. Once you hit day 5 or notice any sign of peeling, you can stop the cotton ball & ointment and leave it alone until the peeling has finished.

Visual Changes: Your eyeliner will have many phases over the course of the healing process. Like we talked about, at the end of your appointment your eyeliner will look bold, bigger, and possibly look a little uneven due to swelling. It’s normal to experience swelling up until 48 hours after. Day 2-3 your liner will look deeper in tone as it gets ready to peel, almost like how a sunburn peels. The peeling can start around day 5 and last a few days, but where the lid skin is so thin, its also not uncommon to not peel at all. So if this happens, there is no need to panic. While and when they’re totally done peeling, you might feel like your eyeliner look patchy or overall lighter than you expected, this is called the “ghosting” phase. What’s happening is a layer of new skin is growing over the layer of skin where we placed our pigment, giving it a milky appearance. Once that skin sheds, your color will come or “bloom” back! This usually happens around week 6-8, which is why we wait that long for the touch up.

What to Avoid: Until your eyeliner has totally shed & is flake free: NO saunas, NO steam rooms/excessive steam, NO excessive sweating/intense workouts, NO swimming/hot tubs, NO makeup/skincare within an inch of your brows, NO picking/scratching/itching, NO contacts/eye drops.

**Following aftercare closely is vital in achieving the best result possible.

  • your touch up

Permanent makeup is a two step process. At your first appointment, we build the foundation of the eyeliner. Then, at your touch up, we can tweak the tone, density, and saturation to ensure your eyeliner will look beautiful for the next 2-5 years. After your touch up, you’ll go through the same exact aftercare as the last slide.

  • protecting your investment

Permanent makeup is low-maintenance, not no maintenance. It’s important to follow the necessary steps to ensure you eyeliner stays looking vibrant.

    • The #1 fading factor when it comes to permanent makeup is sun exposure. It is crucial to protect your eyeliner with sunglasses when outside for long periods of time.

    • Retinals, acids, and other aggressive skincare that promotes cell turnover are best kept away from your eyes at least an inch. Ingredients in these products can aid in fading of your permanent makeup.

The last piece of protecting your investment is coming in for a refresh appointment every 2-5 years. As your eyeliner starts to fade as the years go by, once it get too light in tone or when you find yourself applying makeup again daily, you can come in for a COLORBOOST, a one time appointment to redefine your eyeliner. Then you’re all set again for another 2-5 years!
